Florence Janette Wieland Talmage, age 97, died Sunday May 9, 2010, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Gilead High School; she graduated from Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio with a BA in 1933 and was a member of Mortar Board and Phi Beta Kappa honoraries.
She taught elementary school in Mt. Gilead, Ohio, until her marriage to George Talmage in 1937. A homemaker, mother and active volunteer for the Girl Scouts and All Souls Unitarian Church for many years, Mrs. Talmage returned to graduate school and
Received her MSW from the I.U. School of Social Work in 1961; she then worked as a school social worker for Indianapolis Public Schools.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Talmage was active in many organizations; she taught numerous students in her home as part of the ESOL program. She and her husband were foster parents for over 15 years to five individuals who credit the Talmage with providing them role models for later life. Mrs. Talmage was an active member of All Souls Unitarian Church until the past few years, when her health prevented active involvement. She was recognized as one of the few 60-year members of that church.
In her 90s, although she could no longer drive, Mrs. Talmage was a volunteer for Heartland Volunteer Services. She was able to help by making calls to hospice clients from her home. With a background in social work, she was well equipped to talk and listen to clients and their families.
