Rolland S. (Tack) Nail, 92, of Indianapolis died at St. Vincent Hospital after surgery to help him swallow. Tack was born in Shelbyville, IN October 18, 1917 to Sam and Mary Nail. He met and married his lifelong best friend and wife Jean at Shortridge High School. Tack worked at Allisons, testing airplane engines during the war. He later worked with his father-in-law at the Kahn Tailoring Company. Tack spent the last 55 years selling and specifying furniture for schools with Kiger & Company, Valley School Supply and N & N Consultants. He worked until the day he died.
He loved flying almost as much as he enjoyed people and was part owner of an airplane. He flew into his early 80s. He was past president and program chairman of the Indianapolis Aero Club. He was a member of the Meridian Street United Methodist Church and Served as an usher for many years. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He sat on the board of the Washington Township School Foundation.
He was an avid woodworker. Many of the pieces of furniture in his home were crafted by himself, his dad and father-in-law. Some of the wood used came from trees that were taken down at the time his home was built.
He will be fulfilled to be reunited with Jean and family that preceded him. He is survived by his sister, Mary Ann; his 3 children, Rollie Nail, Sharon Boynton, John Nail, 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and thousands of people he met along his life’s journey. He never met a stranger.
Friends and family will gather on Friday, February 5, 2010 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm in the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel. Funeral will be on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at 11:00am at Meridian Street United Methodist Church with a visitation from 10:00am to 11:00am.
