E. Lloyd Jacobs born March 30, 1918 in New York City of Fredrick A. Jacobs of London, England and Margret (Dunphy) Jacobs of New York, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2010. Lloyd was an engineering graduate of the University of Southern California where he also played football and appeared in two Rose Bowls. Lloyd served five years as a pilot in the Air Corps during World War II, flying low level attack bombers. He flew more than one hundred missions in the European Theatre and he earned the rank of Bird Col. His passion was the love of his country and the security of our nation. He was committed to our children's freedom for generations to come. Returning home at the end of the war, Lloyd started his first business venture as an industrial film producer which later led him to the field of telecommunications. He filmed "Searching for the Table of Gold" in the Dominican Republic. The President of the Dominican Republic, Generalissimo Trujillo, was pleased with the film and ordered the film's production to attract tourists to his country. Lloyd was an astute businessman, athlete, and adventurer. As an avid squash player, he played on national and international U.S. teams and became president of the United States Squash Racquets Association. Though no longer able to participate, he always missed his Monday night squash games and dinner group. He was a fifty-year member of the Indianapolis Athletic Club and a twenty-year member of Ulen Country Club. He was a member of Johnny Parson, Sr.'s pit crew the year they won the Indianapolis 500. He was active in the Republican Party politics and served as precinct committeeman and was active in the Marion County Republican Party. He was the president of Audio Visual Services for more than thirty years. After selling his company to an Eastern conglomerate, he became a member of the Mayor's Administration Department to oversee the City of Indianapolis' Departments of Telecommunications and Energy. As the Director of Telecommunications, he ushered the cable television industry into Marion County. He designed and built the City-County Building television studio where Channel 16 originates its programming. He was directly responsible for bringing the learning channels to both cable systems and for a channel to be set aside for Brian Lamb's C-Span. Retiring after fifteen years with the city, Lloyd and his wife, Barbara, bought a second home on Florida's east coast, Hutchinson Island, overlooking the ocean. He loved this home best and they lived there several months of the year. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Barbara LaMar Jacobs; sons, Christopher and Larry of Indianapolis, Daniel (Sandra) of Carmel, Stephen (Carolyn) of Juno Beach, FL; and daughter, Marianne Hudson of Palm Beach, FL; two step-children, Patrick (Carol) Fitzgerald of Carmel and Sheila (Mike) Knutson of St. Louis, MO. He had eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were a sister, Phoebe Kreiner; four brothers, Fred, Harry, Art, and John Jacobs; and one grandson, Blair Fitzgerald. The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of St. Vincent's Hospice and Summer TraceManor Care for their loving and compassionate care during Lloyd's final weeks. Friends and family will gather on Thursday, January 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis. A Memorial Service will be held there at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. VincentPeyton Manning Children's Hospital, 8402 Harcourt Road, Suite 210, Indianapolis, IN 46260, in memory of his grandson, Blair.
