Mary Alice (Downey) Fogarty, 92, of Indianapolis, IN. passed away on December 24, 2009. She was born in Indianapolis on March 13, 1917, the youngest of seven (7) children of the late Joseph Edward and Catharine (Boylan) Downey. She was preceded in death by all her siblings.
Mary Alice attended St. Agnes Academy and graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. Mary Alice was the widow of Richard W. Fogarty, to whom she was married for forty-nine years. She worked at L. S. Ayres and Company as a buyer in Indianapolis from 1935 to 1945, before moving to Lafayette, IN. where she raised her family. Once her children were in school, she became re-employed at L. S. Ayres in Lafayette. Mrs. Fogarty ultimately became the first female Store Manager in the entire Ayres chain, from which position she retired in 1979. Mary Alice belonged to Delta Theta Tau sorority and St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish in Lafayette. She and Dick returned to their hometown in 1984 and were members of St. Luke Catholic Church. She also was a member of the St. Augustine Guild and a volunteer for the Little Sisters of the Poor for twenty (20) years.
Mary Alice is the mother of Melinda (Bob) Kazmer of Palm City, FL., Sally (Bill) Hasbrook of Indianapolis, IN., and Tim (Suzanne) Fogarty of Lafayette. “Mimi” was the grandmother of: David Michalowski, Stephan (Anahi) Michalowski, Jennifer (Tony) Winkler, Andrew (Julia) Hasbrook, Katie (John) Barbee, Patrick (MaryClare) Hasbrook, Kelly, Timmy, and Taylor Fogarty, as well as sixteen (16) great-grandchildren.
Family and friends will be on Sunday, December 27, 2009 from Noon until 4:00 p.m. at Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, 740 E. 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN.46240. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holiday Drive East, Indianapolis, IN on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.
