Donald C. Hoffman, 97, passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2017 in Indianapolis. He was born on May 20, 1920 in Vincennes, IN. His parents were Maurice F. and Marie (Laube) Hoffman. He married his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Noone Hoffman, on July 19, 1952 in Indianapolis. She survives him as does his sister Barbara Dodd of Cicero, Indiana, and many nieces, nephews and their families.
Don was predeceased by his daughter, Donna Joan Hoffman, his parents, his brothers Maurice A., Robert, James, Charles, Alfred, and his sisters, Anna Catherine Stoelting, Rosemary Wendling, Helen Marie Deem, Sr. Mary Rita Hoffman, RGS, and Mildred Williams.
He was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Vincennes and a veteran of the United States Air Force, having served from 1942-1946. He graduated with an engineering degree from Purdue University in Lafayette. He worked 24 years in senior management positions for RCA at plants in Indianapolis, Needham Heights, Massachusetts, and Auburn, Maine. He retired as an engineering supervisor in 1985. After his RCA career ended, Don served as President of Elda Care Services, Inc. in Medford, Massachusetts, before relocating to Indianapolis in 1978. He then joined a friend to operate Linder's Catering in Anderson, Indiana, commuting daily from his Indianapolis home.
Don was a wonderful husband, loving father, and devout Catholic throughout his lifetime. He was an avid card player, enjoying bridge, euchre, poker and blackjack. He also liked to play Mexican Train dominoes. He was a passionate Purdue football and basketball fan, and was an Indianapolis Colts season ticket holder for many years.
After Don fully retired, he volunteered his considerable talents to the local Society of St. Vincent de Paul for 13 years. Then President Ralph Sperry described him as "the prime mover, innovator and work horse for our SVDP nerve system - the telephone committee." He had converted the Society's Street to Parish Guide to a computerized database consisting of an amazing 180 page guide with 25 pages of maps showing parish boundaries - all for the SVDP Need Line operators.
Don was a member of Saint Luke Catholic Church in Indianapolis. Visitation will be held on Friday, November 3, 2017 from 10:00 - 11:30 am in the Father Courtney Room at Saint Luke Catholic Church, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 in the church celebrated by Don's nephew, Monsignor Joseph Schaedel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul or the Little Sisters of the Poor.
